That is why a lot of libraries just can't afford to buy as many e-books, or as many copies, and often when their circulations are used up they don't repurchase the same titles. And that is true, but the problem is that they can buy that hard copy book for say $35 for a new bestseller, while the e-book copy of the same title may be $100 or more for a library. Their argument is that if the library buys a physical book, it eventually wears out from usage and they will eventually need to weed it from their collection and buy a new copy if they want to keep it on their shelves. As I understand it, it's the publisher's choice to set the price and restrictions, and they don't want libraries to have an unlimited, infinite number of check-outs for their purchase price. Many of the titles that libraries buy from Overdrive are what is called metered, where there are a finite number of checkouts available for their purchase price, and when those are gone they have to buy it again if they want to continue to have it available for their patrons. The app (or website) used to access the inventory is not what decides what titles they have available. If the library had more inventory when it was the Overdrive app, it was because they had more inventory at that time. Overdrive is still the company name, they just changed to the Libby app and are in the process of phasing out the Overdrive app. You may or may not receive a reason.Ī complete and up to date list of rules is available on the new Reddit view Failing to do so will end up on your post being removed and/or your account banned.
